The Villa Derby Small Mouth Catch

Participated in the Flaming Gorge Vill Derby Fishing Tournament. It was a great fishing weekend. The Small Mouth were a little slow to get fired up but when Sunday rolled around the weather warmed up. The bite was finally on. Our team was able to catch several nice 2lbs to 3lbs fish. I landed this 3.54 lbs 17.5" small mouth which put me in 5th place for the bass category.

30" 8 lbs Walleye Caught July 7

Check out this trophy Walleye I caught while fishing with Brent Fenn on July 7th at Starvation Reservoir. The fish measured just under 30" and weighed 8lbs.

Walleye season is back on!

Spent all day yesterday fishing at Starvation. It took all day but we caught a number of nice fish. The two biggest being 22" and 21". As you can see we had a couple of really happy fisherman! A number of techniques were used, however a slow presentation was a must. The bite was really slow.

Spring Bass Fishing at Steineker!

We spent last weekend at Steineker. We caught over 20 Large Mouth Bass and numerous Bluegill. Sorry I don't have any pics to show off but we forgot the camera. The presentation we used was a very slow drifted worm harness about 20' deep. The action seemed to increase later in the day and into dusk. The morning fish was non-existent.

This was an awesome experience. Thanks to Brandon, Brent. and Colton for all their help in harvesting this nice bull.

Friday September 26th. The hunt started well before daylight. We rode the four wheelers for about 15 miles from camp to McCook Ridge. We seen a number of bulls in a large burn area the day before and I think we seen the bull I shot right a daylight but couldn't get on him right then. We stalked and called for about 2 hours before we walked into the burn. We had a couple different bulls talking back to us but they never presented a shot. Around 10:30 a.m. we had made a big circle and was about 1.5 miles away from the four wheelers. Brent stopped and made some more calls - then the bull answered. He was on the next ridge over in the sky line. I knew he was a decent bull so everyone headed that direction to get a better look. Once we were in position we called and he wouldn't come in. Brent and I decided to try to sneak up on where we thought he was bedded down - however he wasn't there. Then suddenly the bull answered back from the bottom of the draw. He was well over 300 yards away. The next time I saw him he was 200 yards away and coming our direction. I didn't want to shoot my muzzle loader at that distance plus I didn't get that great of look at him. The next 20 minutes seemed to take for ever. I thought the bull would come to us on the North side of our position but he didn't. Brent whispered "there he is - it's the bull". I had to make a complete 180 turn to the South and take aim. I thought he was a good bull and I asked Brent "Is he the shooter?" He replied "He's a good bull - a little weak on his 5th and 6th but his thirds are awesome". I asked again "Is he a shooter - would you shoot him if it were your tag". "Yes" - BOOM - I shot (muzzle blasted Brent) and the bull whirled and ran. I watched as he appeared to drop - but I wasn't sure. Brent said he's down. I ranged the spot where the bull stood - 25.5 yards away. I felt confident the TC.50 Cal was accurate at that distance! We waited for Colton and Brandon to come over then we all proceeded to look for him. It was a short time before we found a small trail of blood, which quickly turned into larger pools. The bull ran back off the ridge top into the bottom before he collapsed. It was some work to get him out of the hill side but worth it. Four hours later we were back in camp reliving the events of the day.

The Starvation Classic is fast approaching and I took advantage of a great opportunity to practice today. T and Heath were able to join me and together we caught 6 Walleye and several yellow perch. The biggest of the bunch was 22" long - my season best so far. Trolling a Rapala was the only way we could catch them today. Even more strange was the time we caught them - not until 12:30 in the afternoon? I hope that we are able to successfully land a couple of limits next weekend!

More Starvation....

Hit the lake at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday and fished until night fall. We caught several Walleye - biggest ones being 19" & 18". The yellow perch were thick! I lost track of how many of those we caught. We were also able to find a few small mouth in the lake. We had the best luck using Crawdad Imitators and Lindy Rigs.

I took advantage of a guys only fishing trip on Saturday August 2nd. We hit Starvation at 7:00 a.m. and fished until 2:30 p.m. The fishing was steady but not fast. The bag of fish include a 19", 17", and 15" Walleye, a 2lbs Small Mouth, and a few Yellow Perch. The biggest walleye came from a yellow grub fished in a weed bed. There were several boats fishing around us all morning. As the day went on, recreation boats made it impossible to continue fishing. I had three boats pulling tubes around my boat - waves came over the side - and to top it off a water ski boat pulled up and began to load up my markers from the water! That's when I decided it was time to go home......

Sandwash Trip August 5th

The entire family went to Sandwash for the evening fish on Tuesday. We caught several rainbow trout with a variety of tactics. We had the best luck fishing deeper water with a worm harness. As the evening progressed pop gear and a worm was the top producer. Still a red tagged fish didn't find it's way to our boat!

Book Cliffs Scouting Trip July 27th

This will be the first of a series of posts documenting my Book Cliffs Bittercreek Bull Elk Hunt. Brent Fenn and I put 100 miles on the four wheelers Sunday July 27th riding around the Book Cliffs. We spotted lots of Buck Deer - however the largest was around 25". Most of the Bucks were 4 points with a less than 20" spread. The majority of the time was spent based out of the divide. In the AM hours we went toward Colorado and in afternoon rode to the Roadless area. We counted approximately 50 bucks.

We seen around 15 elk - all of which were cows. After talking to some others in the area we learned there were some smaller rag bulls around but nothing to brag about.

We also spent some time during lunch at P and R Springs.

Fishing Report - July 19th

Spent all weekend at Steinker Lake, Vernal UT. Was able to catch serveral small to medium sized Large Mouth Bass and numberous Rainbows under 16 inches. It seems the Trout were more active in deeper water. We used lead core line and a worm harness to peak there interest. Pop Gear and a Worm were useless. Bass were buried in heavy cover and had to wiggle a softbait in their face to get a strike. Finally the kids enjoyed their playtime on the new tube.
